This case describes clearly the process of how the IQ started with an idea to
becoming a final product. This development process working from the smart
concept thinking method is representative of many of the products developed by
Marc de Groot Design.
Inspiration and idea
Starting point for the development of the IQ was the largest (1.80m diameter) of
the Glow Lighting collection, "a lamp to work." The Glow by its size is almost perceived
in itself to be an area where you really can stand or sit. This was the basis for the IQ,
a comfortable, quick to set up space that can be used as a quiet or meetin- and
multimedia presentation room in open plan offices.
Marketing
The IQ offers a flexible solution as an office, meeting, quiet and multimedia presentation room
for gardens or office reception areas. The application is a sustainable business investment for
companies which can be used as a temporary, reusable training or preparation space for such
activities as trainings or presentations.
The IQ is excellently suitable for those monumental buildings where no architectural changes
can be made, but that are often obligated to comply to certain occupational health procedures
for its staff. The space in this case can be used as both temporary and permanent and offers
an affordable alternative to current infratructure and associated architectural modifications.
Also the range of the IQ can be extended much further, e.g. for outdoor use, fairs and can
be performed entirely cradle to cradle
R&D process
Experience from manufacturing the Glow was the starting point for the IQ. The challenge was
to find a simple way to put it together because of its large format and transport requirements.
The research for materials focused on the degree of strain in various materials, acoustic
performance (damping), possibilities for multimedia presentations and the ventilation within.
The production of IQ can take place for the most part in social workshops, where the designer
can apply most of his attention on passing on the knowledge and guidance of its employees. Employees
can in this case can be both people with physical or mental disabilities and/or pupils/students.
Exposure & response
The first IQ prototype was introduced at the 100% Rotterdam design exhibition. During and after this exhibition,
many architects and other decision makers were interested in (a customized version), the product,
since no such thing had been set up specifically for the office market.
Following 100% Rotterdam the IQ generated exposure in several ways: Test presentation at Ahrend Amsterdam ZO, Ahrend Eindhoven, Rotterdam University and publications including the Telegraph, Inside Design and Architect..
